Rachel Gaubinger’s research brings together the fields of Victorian and modernist studies, focusing on questions of genealogy, affect, and narrative form in British literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Her current book manuscript, “Sibling Plots: Form and Family in British Modernism,” looks at the ways modernist fiction invokes and reworks the family plots of Victorian realism. A surprising number of novels from the early twentieth century center on sibling characters; these figures prove central to modernist writers seeking to explore the legacies of inherited familial and narrative structures in their fictions while departing from the reproductive emphasis of the marriage plot. An article derived from this project recently appeared in The Journal of Modern Literature.

Like her scholarship, Professor Gaubinger’s teaching spans Victorian and modernist periods.
