Connecticut College senior exhibits community activism through photography

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The public is invited to attend the opening of an exhibit, "Proof of Community," on Saturday, April 25, at the Golden Street Gallery, 94 Golden Street, New London. The exhibit, a collection of photographs by Gabrielle Kaminsky, a senior at Connecticut College, captures the relationship between student volunteers and the New London community.

The exhibit, which runs through May 17, is sponsored by the college's Holleran Center for Community Action and Public Policy, which promotes community-based learning, research and activism in an effort to advance New London and its surrounding neighborhoods.

Kaminsky photographed students working with children through S.I.S.T.E.R. (Students Implementing Support Through Education and Recreation), a program originally developed by students in the college's Office of Volunteers for Community Service (OVCS), and at the Thomas Valley Council for Community Action Early Care and Education/ New London Head Start center. Using photojournalism to record community outreach programs, Kaminsky hopes to show her viewers the importance of community action.

"Part of attending a liberal arts school is gaining the understanding that teaching and learning happens in multiple forums, not just in classrooms," Kaminsky said. "What students gain from their engagement in the community is something that cannot merely be taught - it is real life experience."

The Golden Street Gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. on Mondays, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Friday, and noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays. A gallery reception will be held April 25 at 6 p.m.
