Fall Open House draws prospective students to campus

On what could only be described as a perfect fall day, more than 260 prospective students visited Connecticut College yesterday during the annual Fall Open House. Students and their parents were invited to attend a number of events designed to allow them to explore the campus and get a feel for the College's intellectual climate and community. "I encourage you to visit a class, attend a session highlighting our faculty, students and distinctive programs, take a tour, meet with a coach, or simply wander the greens or the halls of academic buildings," Martha C. Merrill, dean of admission and financial aid, told visitors at a welcome event.

Prospective students learned about the College's interdisciplinary and hands-on approach to academics, student clubs and activities, the first-year experience and opportunities to internationalize any major. Students and their parents were also invited to tour the college's science facilities and learn about the new state-of-the-art building for life sciences that will be completed in Fall 2012. At the welcome, Science Leader Jannette Rivera '14 told prospective students why she chose Connecticut College. "I wanted to be somewhere that had a close community," she said. "I wanted the privilege of being able to build relationships with professors. I wanted to be somewhere that was going to challenge me, but also provide me with a support system that would help me succeed these next four years." She added that she had been especially impressed by the academics when she visited the College. "I remember sitting in Professor [Larry] Vogel's philosophy class, and, for the first time, feeling like I was submerged in education, not wanting to take a breath of air."
