As Connecticut College's multicultural center, Unity House contributes to the educational mission of the College by providing leadership and support in the College's commitment to diversity and multiculturalism.
Our goal is to nurture and empower underrepresented and first-generation college students throughout their journey to academic and personal excellence while collaborating with various offices and departments to foster campus-wide awareness and open dialogues on diversity issues.
What we do
We serve three distinct constituencies — students of color and other underrepresented students; the larger campus student body; and faculty, staff and alumni. Our mission therefore, is also three-fold:
- We provide academic, cultural and personal support to students of color and other underrepresented students on campus, while helping them develop intellectual, social and leadership skills.
- We collaborate with other college departments and offices to educate the larger student body on issues of diversity and multiculturalism.
- We provide support for and collaborate with staff, faculty and alumni of color.
Who is Unity House for?
The simple answer is: everyone! Our goal is to foster a welcoming communal environment where students, staff, faculty and alumni can share in the creation and the practice of pluralistic living.
Unity House, as a facility, serves as a gathering place for students, staff, faculty and alumni of diverse backgrounds and interests. Rooms within the House are used for events, meetings, studying and lounging. The Center houses administrative offices, a large lounge (Pepsico Room), a conference room, kitchen and a resource library. Every day at Unity, you can find students of all backgrounds sharing in the community as they find spaces of comfort in our lounge areas. We also host culturally affirming and educational programs during our various cultural-themed months.
We cultivate leadership skills for students active in the various student organizations affiliated with Unity House. And we run mentorship programs and create academic programming that contributes to students' success throughout their four years at Connecticut College.
We strive to create a supportive and welcoming environment for all of students while upholding our commitment to those for whom this Center was originally created to serve. So join a Unity-affiliated club, come to an event and join in the conversation.
